How pleasing it was to see such a large crowd support the 72nd Huon Show. Despite clashing with the Christmas Pageant and the Bothwell Bushfest, Show patrons turned out in force in ideal conditions to attend the 72nd Huon Show.
Many favourable comments were received during the day on the Show – from both Show patrons and from the machinery, food stalls and other exhibitors. Congratulations must go to the machinery firms for their support. This support from all stall holders and exhibitors contribute to making the Huon Show a truly agricultural experience. One that the Show is renowned for. Social media played a large part in the publicising of this year’s Show and Huon Show Committee member, Simone Hayers is to be congratulated on her effort in this area. Post Show comments on Face Book were very complimentary in respect to the Show
David Frankcomb in his role as Ringmaster, ably controlled the arena and positioning of the entertainment. With the addition of the Back to Basics marquee, Reptile Rescue, Ferret display and Gomez and Friends were moved to the southern side of the Tassal Marquee. Entertainment was well received with the Tassal marquee holding children’s entertainment including Make Believe, Puppet Show, Circus workshop and on the arena – were the Girl Guides providing free games for any one wishing to join in.
Day Star Duo provided relaxing music and across the arena on Stage 2, Sundown Band and a new band performing for the first time at the Show – Eclipse, entertained Show patrons. The Light Horse Brigade, Fergusson Tractors celebrating their 60th Anniversary were all on show with the dog high jump being still the biggest watched event of the day. The Ute Competition also provided a spectacle on the arena. The Committee prides itself on the amount of free entertainment offered to Show patrons and this year was no exception. Back to Basics, in its initial year attracted patrons and will be improved on in 2019. With Showjumping, the draught horse display and other activities, the arena was the centre of attraction all day.
Cattle Sections were well represented by Jordan River Learning, Tasman High School and other exhibitors showing cattle as well. The Geard and the Direen Families exhibited in the Dairy Section. Good entries were received in the Alpaca, sheep, cavy and poultry sections. Commercial Cattle and Sheep entries were on a par with other years. The equestrian section ran smoothly with showjumping a highlight on the arena. The Animal Nursery conducted by Kingborough-Huon Rural Youth was busy all day. Good entries were received in the horticultural, handcrafts, cooking and school exhibits with 208 entries in the school cooking section alone. Woodchopping, always a feature, was well patronised. The Kennel Section, conducted by the Huon and Channel Kennel Club was a feature.

A number of new volunteers assisted with the Show this year and without volunteers assisting the Show could not go ahead and as successful as it is. A big thankyou is extended to these special people. As well as our volunteers, special mention must be made of our many sponsors. Their assistance is invaluable – whether it be in cash or kind, without their generosity the Show would not be in a position to continue. We thank them all sincerely.
